Government Office Transformation

Case study

CoDesign + Sheldon collaborated to deliver a full-floor government workplace in Brisbane. This project fluidly integrates inclusive design, sustainable practices, and modern functionality to meet the ever-evolving needs of its workforce while celebrating Indigenous culture.

Honouring Heritage Through Design

Indigenous cultural elements are thoughtfully woven into the workplace design, cultivating a meaningful connection to Country. Acoustic panels and a striking feature rug, designed by Indigenous artists, add texture and depth to the space while reflecting a commitment to sustainability through eco-conscious materials. In the breakout area, a captivating feature wall adorned with illustrations of native Australian plants enhances the earthy aesthetic and pays homage to the local environment.

The workplace boasts open-plan collaborative zones crafted to encourage social interaction, employee well-being, and productive work styles. With a palette inspired by natural materials, including plywood finishes and earthy tones, these spaces offer a serene and inviting atmosphere that supports various work preferences.

The office features sit-to-stand desks, acoustic partitions for noise control, and quiet focus zones. Employees can transition between individual work, team collaboration, and personal recharge time. Specialised areas, including private quiet rooms, collaborative hubs, and a wellness room equipped with amenities like a sink, fridge, comfortable seating, and space for a prayer mat, ensure the space is inclusive and thoughtfully designed for all.

Workspaces that inspire connection and productivity.

Sustainability That Works

Aligning with our mission to regenerate workplace design and construction through sustainable alternatives, alongside the government’s commitment to work towards net zero, this project prioritised adaptive reuse and sustainable products. Elements of the base building that were in good condition were reused, including the ceiling grids in the front of house area, polished concrete flooring, kitchen raised flooring and most of the LED lighting. Furniture from the previous space was also reused, including the boardroom bench seat, kitchen bench and ottomans.

We also used offcuts from joinery that was demolished on site to modify the new joinery to suit the new layout, ensuring that limited materials were wasted, while specifying sustainable new products.

A Thoughtful Design for the Future

This Brisbane government workplace exemplifies CoDesign + Sheldon’s expertise in creating spaces that are functional, inclusive, and future-ready. By merging Indigenous-inspired design, sustainability, and adaptable work zones, the project delivers a workplace where employees feel connected and supported.

The result is an office environment that not only meets the practical needs of a government workforce but also stands as a testament to CoDesign + Sheldon’s dedication to meaningful design.
